Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a behavior consultant and a dog trainer?

Trainers are excellent at teaching specific skills, and for many pets, that's exactly what they need. My work comes into play when behavior challenges make traditional training harder, or when there's more going on beneath the surface than skill-building alone can address.

How do I know if my pet needs behavior consulting?

If your pet's behavior is impacting your daily life, if traditional training hasn't helped, or if your pet is showing signs of fear, anxiety, or stress that make learning difficult, behavior consulting might be the right fit.

How does behavior consulting work?

I'm here to coach you through the process. Yes, I work hands-on with your pet during sessions, often to demonstrate techniques or help you with timing and body mechanics, but the goal is to build your skills so you know what to do when your pet is struggling. You'll learn how to respond in moments of chaos or heightened stress in a way that's helpful and productive.

Do you work with cats too?

Yes! I work with both dogs and cats showing fearful or challenging behaviors. Whether your cat is hiding, aggressive, or struggling with litter box issues, we can work together to help them feel safer and more confident.

Do you offer in-person or virtual consultations?

Both! I offer in-person sessions throughout Whatcom County and surrounding areas, including Bellingham, Blaine, Ferndale, Fairhaven, Birch Bay, Sudden Valley, and Anacortes. My standard service area is within about 35 minutes of Bellingham, with further travel available for an additional fee.

What training methods do you use?

I use force-free, reward-based methods - no punishment or aversive tools. I'm a certified Fear Free trainer, which means your pet's emotional well-being comes first. We focus on building trust, positive associations, and yes, having fun!

Does the training method matter? Science-based, force-free methods make the difference between truly helping your pet learn new skills and build confidence versus just managing symptoms or suppressing behavior temporarily. It's the difference between strengthening your bond and damaging it. The methods I use are backed by science and lead to lasting change. Everyone wins, you, your pet, and your relationship.

What are your qualifications and certifications?

I'm an IAABC Certified Dog Behavior Consultant (CDBC) and a Fear Free Certified Trainer. I have 13 years of combined experience working with fearful and reactive pets, and I've been part of Pet Harmony's Pet Pro mentorship program for many years.

I'm committed to staying current through ongoing continuing education because the science of behavior is always evolving, and your pet deserves the most effective, compassionate approach available.

Why do credentials matter?

The pet training industry is completely unregulated - it's truly the wild west. Anyone can call themselves a trainer or behavior consultant, regardless of their knowledge, experience, or methods. Some pretty awful, aversive techniques are still used in the name of "training."

  • Credentials from respected organizations like IAABC and Fear Free mean I've met specific education and ethical standards. I work hard to find solutions that won't break your pet's trust or damage your relationship. When you're inviting someone into your home to work with your pet, knowing they're held to professional standards matters.

How long are sessions?

The initial session is 90 minutes. All follow-up sessions are 60 minutes.

How many sessions will I need?

I can't predict exactly how many sessions you'll need, for the same reason a counselor can't tell you how long therapy will take. It depends on your pet's history, the behavior's complexity, and how things progress between sessions.

I offer session packages (2-pack, 4-pack, and 8-pack), and meeting every two weeks typically keeps people progressing well. We'll assess together and adjust as needed.

Do you guarantee results?

No one can ethically guarantee specific behavior outcomes, there are too many variables like genetics, health history, past experiences, and consistency between sessions.

Here's what I can promise: a science-backed approach tailored to your pet, collaboration at a pace that works for your family, and my commitment to troubleshooting when something isn't working. Progress, not perfection, is the goal.

How do I book my first appointment?

Choose your package, click the booking link, select in-person or virtual, and schedule your initial session.

Should my whole family be present?

Everyone's welcome to join sessions, but don't stress if someone can't make it. It's most helpful if the people who will be working with your pet day-to-day can attend.

How much do your services cost?

I offer session packages that include your initial 90-minute session, follow-up sessions, a customized behavior plan, and support between sessions. Visit my Services page for current pricing and package options.
